Anthony Vega’s solo home run on the first pitch of the game gave the Ducks a 1-0 lead, but the Blue Crabs tied the score in the bottom of the frame on Alfredo Marte’s run-scoring single.
Ryde Rodriguez homered off of Bruce Kern in the second inning, giving the Blue Crabs a 2-1 lead. They took a 3-1 advantage in the third on Eric Garcia’s RBI single.
Long Island scored four runs in the fourth, taking a 5-3 lead. Vega’s RBI single and Fehlandt Lentini’s three-run homer did the damage. The Ducks tallied four more runs in the fifth on Mike Blanke’s two-run homer, Vega’s RBI triple, and Delta Cleary Jr.’s run-scoring single.
In the seventh, Alfredo Marte’s two-run home run cut Southern Maryland’s deficit to 9-5. Antoan Richardson scored when Michael Snyder hit into a double play, making it 9-6, but that was all Southern Maryland could muster.
Kern (3-1) struck out seven over six innings, allowing three runs on eight hits and four walks in the win. Daryl Thompson (2-6) took the loss, yielding seven runs (three earned) on 11 hits with two strikeouts and one walk over four and one-third innings. Todd Coffey collected the save with a scoreless ninth.
Cleary Jr. led the way for the Ducks with four hits. Matt Wessinger reached base four times, scoring two runs.
