Hicksville native delivers in return to Flock

(Central Islip, N.Y., July 2, 2013) – The Long Island Ducks defeated the Somerset Patriots 4-3 in waddle-off fashion on Tuesday night before a past-capacity crowd of 6,532 at Bethpage Ballpark.

The Ducks jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the second inning on Bryant Nelson’s two-run homer and Ramon Castro’s RBI single off Patriots starter Josh Lowey. Somerset cut the lead to two in the fourth on a run-scoring groundout to first by Cory Aldridge.

A run-scoring error and a RBI groundout off the bat of Jonny Tucker in the sixth inning for the Patriots tied the game at three. It remained even until the bottom of the ninth inning when Kraig Binick lined a walk-off RBI single to center to score Adam Bailey with the winning run.

Neither starter factored into the decision. James Houser threw one and one-third scoreless innings before leaving with an injury, allowing two hits while striking out two, and Lowey tossed six innings, allowing three runs on six hits with seven strikeouts. Leo Rosales (2-2) earned the win after pitching out of a bases loaded, one out jam in the top of the ninth, and Jason Lowey (3-1) took the loss, surrendering a run on two hits and a walk in two-thirds of an inning.

Bailey and Binick each had two hits to pace the Flock.

The Ducks and Patriots continue their three-game series on Wednesday night. Game time is slated for 7:05 p.m., with the Bethpage Ballpark gates opening at 6:05. Following the game, all fans in attendance will be treated to the second of three consecutive Grucci Fireworks Extravaganzas, presented by Atlantic Hyundai. Duck Tales: The walk-off win for the Ducks was their third of the season. Danny Perales delivered a walk-off single on May 29 against Camden, and Joash Brodin had a waddle-off base hit on June 9 in game two of a doubleheader against Southern Maryland. It was Binick’s first walk-off hit as a Duck since May 6, 2012 against Camden…Bryant Nelson’s two-run home run in the second inning was his 10th of the season, the most among active Ducks batters. All 10 of his homers have come batting left-handed, and seven of his longballs have come at Bethpage Ballpark. Long Island has now hit 71 home runs as a team this season, good for second in the Atlantic League behind Somerset (73)…The past-capacity crowd of 6,532 was the largest of the season at Bethpage Ballpark. The previous high was 6,516 which occurred on June 8 against Southern Maryland and June 22 against Sugar Land. It also marked the fourth sold out crowd of the season at the Duck Pond. The Ducks have now hosted 619 sellout crowds in franchise history, an Atlantic League record.
