Lombardozzi’s four-hit night and Berardi’s two homers not enough for Long Island

(Lancaster, Pa., June 30, 2021) – The Long Island Ducks were defeated by the Lancaster Barnstormers 16-8 on Wednesday night in the middle game of a three-game series at Clipper Magazine Stadium.

Lew Ford’s RBI fielder’s choice gave the Ducks a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Lancaster went in front in the second on a two-out, two-run single by Cleuluis Rondon off Ducks starter Vin Mazzaro. A two-run homer to right by Blake Gailen in the third extended the Barnstormers lead to 4-1.

Lancaster struck for four more runs in the fourth to make in an 8-1 ballgame. Caleb Gindl’s RBI double and RBI singles by Trayvon Robinson and Kelly Dugan highlighted the inning. Long Island rallied back with four runs in the fourth off Barnstormers starter Dominic DiSabatino to close the gap to 8-5. Jesse Berardi’s solo homer, a two-run homer by Steve Lombardozzi and a run-scoring error did the damage.

However, Lancaster put the game out of reach with a six-run sixth and two more runs in the seventh. The Ducks scored three in the ninth on Berardi’s second homer of the game, a two-run shot, and Ryan Jackson’s sac fly, but they would get no closer.

DiSabatino (3-3) earned the win, tossing six innings, allowing five runs (three earned) on seven hits and three walks while striking out five. Mazzaro (1-1) took the loss, conceding eight runs on eight hits and five walks over three and two-thirds innings.

Lombardozzi led the Flock offensively with four hits, two RBIs and a run. Berardi added three hits, three RBIs and two runs.
