Lancaster avoids sweep at hands of Ducks

(Central Islip, N.Y., June 5, 2014) – The Long Island Ducks were defeated by the Lancaster Barnstormers 4-2 on Thursday night in the final game of a four-game series at Bethpage Ballpark.

Lancaster plated the game’s first run in the opening inning on a two-out RBI single by Brock Kjeldgaard off Ducks starter Fernando Hernandez. Long Island tied the game in the second on a run-scoring double play ball off the bat of Jan Vazquez.

The Barnstormers regained the lead in the third on a three-run homer to right by Kjeldgaard. The Ducks rallied for a run in the ninth on a RBI double to center by Adam Bailey, but they could not pull even.

Mark Rogers (2-1) earned the win, tossing six innings, allowing one run on six hits and a walk while striking out five. Hernandez (2-3) suffered the loss, surrendering four runs on seven hits and two walks with six strikeouts in six innings. Jason Urquidez earned his third save despite allowing a run on two hits in the ninth.

Bailey led the Flock with three hits, while Lew Ford and Brendan Harris each added two.

The Ducks hit the road on Friday for a five-game series against the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. from Regency Furniture Stadium. Right-hander Jared Lansford will take the mound for the Ducks against Blue Crabs righty Gabriel Hernandez. Long Island returns home on Wednesday, June 11 as the Ferry Cup Series returns to Bethpage Ballpark when the Ducks take the on the Bridgeport Bluefish in a three-game series. Game time is slated for 6:35 p.m., with gates opening at 5:35. The first 1,500 fans in attendance will receive Ducks Baseball Banks, courtesy of Municipal Credit Union. Duck Tales: Cody Puckett extended his on-base streak to 28 games with a walk in the first inning. That is the longest on-base streak in the Atlantic League this season. The second baseman has at least one hit in 23 of the 28 games during the streak…Adam Bailey’s three hits on the night gave him his third three-hit contest of the year. The second-year Ducks now has eight multi-hit game in 2014…With two hits in the game, Lew Ford moved into a tie with Puckett for the team lead in two-hit games with 10 this season. The former big leaguer now has a team-best 17 multi-hit games in 2014. Brendan Harris also collected two hits in the game and now has five two-hit games and six multi-hit contests…Randy Ruiz picked up his first triple of the season in the sixth inning. The last time the former big leaguer tripled was in 2012 as a member of the Reno Aces (AAA, Diamondbacks). The Bronx native now has 25 three-baggers in his professional career.
