Teams combine for five home runs, 16 runs and 26 hits
(New Britain, Conn., June 4, 2019) – The Long Island Ducks were defeated by the New Britain Bees 11-5 on Tuesday night in the second game of a four-game series at New Britain Stadium.
Lew Ford gave the Ducks a 1-0 lead in the second with a solo home run to right field off Bees starter Jed Bradley. A solo homer to right by Taylor Motter and a two-run homer to left by Jonathan Galvez in the bottom of the second put the Bees ahead 3-1.
Kirk Nieuwenhuis tied the game in the fourth with a two-run home run to right-center field. However, a two-run homer down the right field line by Logan Moore off Ducks starter Mariel Checo in the bottom of the inning restored New Britain’s two-run lead at 5-3.
New Britain put the game out of reach with a four-run fifth and single runs in the sixth and seventh. Five RBI singles and a run-scoring double did the damage. Long Island closed to within 11-5 in the eighth on an RBI single by Ford and a bases loaded walk to Rando Moreno but could not inch closer.
Bradley (2-0) earned the win, tossing five innings of three-run ball, allowing six hits and two walks while striking out six. Checo (1-1) took the loss, yielding five runs on eight hits over four innings with two strikeouts.
Nieuwenhuis led the Ducks offensively with three hits, two RBIs and two runs. L.J. Mazzilli added three hits, a run and a walk, while Ford totaled two hits, two RBIs and a run.
