New Britain wins close game in bottom of the ninth

(New Britain, Conn., July 30, 2019) – The Long Island Ducks were defeated by the New Britain Bees 3-2 on Tuesday night in the opening game of a three-game series at New Britain Stadium.

Neither side scored until the fifth inning as both starting pitchers were cruising early on. The Ducks broke the stalemate with a sacrifice fly from Vladimir Frias in the top half of the fifth. The Bees responded immediately when Logan Moore led off the home half of the inning with a home run, tying the game at one.

New Britain then took the lead in the sixth when Jonathan Galvez drove in a run with an RBI single to left field. It was the Ducks who had the answer this time, putting one on the board in the seventh inning and tying the game thanks to a sacrifice fly to left off the bat of John Apostolo. However, the Bees were not done as Bijan Rademacher came up with a runner on second and two outs in the bottom of the ninth. Rademacher hit a ball that took an odd hop over first basemen Clint Freeman and bounced into left field allowing the winning run to score.

Neither starting pitcher factored into the decision. Pedro Beato threw six innings, allowing two runs on seven hits and one walk for Long Island, while striking out seven batters. New Britain starter Devin Burke tossed seven innings, surrendering two runs on six hits and five strikeouts. Tyler Danish (4-2) picked up the win for the Bees, pitching a perfect ninth inning with one strikeout. Rob Rogers (2-2) was tagged with the loss, yielding one run in the bottom of the ninth on one hit and a walk in two-thirds of an inning out of the bullpen.
