Long Island claims third consecutive series victory

(Central Islip, N.Y., Aug. 23, 2015) – The Long Island Ducks defeated the Camden Riversharks 5-1 on Sunday evening in the rubber game of a three-game series at Bethpage Ballpark.

Camden took a 1-0 lead in the opening inning on a two-out RBI single to center field from Carlos Guzman off of Ducks starter John Brownell. Long Island responded with five runs in the bottom of the third against Riversharks starter Bill Murphy. RBI doubles by Dan Lyons and Mike Blanke, along with a two-run double from Sean Burroughs, highlighted the inning.

That was more than enough for Brownell (10-3) to earn the win. The right-hander tossed six innings, allowing one run on four hits and three walks while striking out three. Murphy (4-14) took the loss, surrendering five runs (four earned) on 13 hits and two walks in six innings with five strikeouts. Billy Buckner earned his first save of the year with three scoreless innings to close the game, giving up three hits while striking out five.

Delta Cleary, Jr. led the Flock with four hits, while Burroughs chipped in with three hits and two RBI.

Long Island hits the road for seven games starting Monday with the opener of a three-game series against the Bridgeport Bluefish. Game time is slated for 7:05 p.m. from The Ballpark at Harbor Yard. The Ducks will return home on Tuesday, September 1 to begin a three-game series with the Bluefish. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m., with the Bethpage Ballpark gates opening at 5:35 (5:20 for full season ticket holders. Duck Tales: The Ducks earned their third consecutive series victory with Sunday’s win, as they took two of three games from Camden. Long Island has now won 11 of their last 13 games dating back to August 11 and is 16-6 during the month of August. In addition, the Ducks improved to 18-7-6 in series play this year and 3-0-1 in series play against the Riversharks in 2015…With five more runs and 13 more hits, the Ducks’ offense continued their torrid play of late. In their last 12 games, the Ducks have scored 76 runs and collected 143 hits. That’s an average of 6.3 runs and 11.9 hits per game. Long Island leads the Atlantic League this season in batting average (.281), hits (1,101) and runs scored (534)…Delta Cleary, Jr. earned his third four-hit game of the year with four singles. His other two four-hit games came on August 16 against Southern Maryland and June 1 against York. The outfielder is now tied with Lew Ford for the most four-hit games by a Duck this season. Cleary, Jr. has hit safely in eight straight games, earning multiple hits in four of them…Dan Lyons picked up two hits and a walk and has now reached base safely in 29 of his last 30 games dating back to July 23. In that span, he is batting .360 (41-for-114). Lyons has also hit safely in 16 straight games and has scored at least one run in 14 of his last 16 contests. In the 16 games, he is batting .400 (26-for-65) with two homers, 14 RBI and 21 runs scored. The hitting streak is tied for the longest by a Duck this year, which was accomplished by Randy Ruiz from June 26 to July 16…Cody Puckett two more hits to extend his on-base streak to 20 consecutive games. During the streak, the infielder is batting .329 (27-for-82) with four doubles, one homer, 14 RBI and eight runs. The on-base streak is eight games shy of the longest by a Duck this year. That was accomplished by Lew Ford, who reached base in 28 straight games from June 7 through July 5 before being signed by Tijuana of the Mexican League…Sean Burroughs collected three hits for the second time and multiple hits for the eighth time in 14 games since joining the Ducks. The infielder also earned two RBI to account for his fifth multi-RBI game since coming to Long Island. The former big leaguer has hit safely in 11 of his last 12 games and has multiple hits in eight of his last nine contests. Since joining the Ducks on August 10, Burroughs is batting .400 (24-for-60) with three doubles, one homer, 14 RBI and eight runs.
