Long Island claims first win of 2014

(Bridgewater, N.J., April 27, 2014) – The Long Island Ducks defeated the Somerset Patriots 6-3 on Sunday afternoon in the final game of a three-game series at TD Bank Ballpark.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS: Long Island sets a season-high with six runs

The Patriots scratched out the game’s first run in the opening inning against Ducks starter Bobby Blevins as Nate Spears scored on an error by Chris McClendon. The Ducks answered back to tie the score in the third against Patriots starter Zach Kroenke when Joash Brodin’s sacrifice fly to right plated Cody Puckett.

Long Island took the lead in the fourth on a sac fly to center by Ryan Strieby and added another run in the fifth on Brodin’s RBI double to left-center. The Ducks increased the lead to 4-1 in the seventh on a bloop single to right by Brodin and a throwing error by Ty Wright.

Somerset closed to within one on a RBI double by Robbie Widlansky and a run-scoring groundout from Damaso Espino in the seventh. However, Puckett answered back in the eighth with a two-out, two-run single to put the game out of reach.

Blevins (1-0) earned the win, tossing six innings, allowing three runs (two earned) on just one hit while striking out six. Kroenke (0-1) suffered the loss, yielding three runs on five hits in five innings of work. Leo Rosales earned his first save of the year with a scoreless ninth inning.

Puckett led the Flock with three hits while Brodin and Sergio Miranda each added two.
