Comeback falls short in series opener
(Central Islip, N.Y., July 15, 2013) – The Long Island Ducks were defeated by the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs 4-2 on Monday morning in the first game of a three-game series at Bethpage Ballpark.

Southern Maryland scored first when Jeremy Owens singled in a run in the fifth inning. The Blue Crabs doubled their lead in the sixth when Wladimir Sutil scored on an error. Sutil then hit a two-run single to left field in the seventh inning to extend the lead to four.
Bryant Nelson put the Ducks on the board with a two-out RBI single to center field in the eighth inning. Bill Hall followed with another single to drive in a run, but the Ducks could not come any closer.
Blue Crabs starter Ian Marshall (9-3) picked up the win, allowing eight hits and two runs with six strikeouts in eight innings. Long Island starter Dontrelle Willis (5-4) took the loss in a complete game effort, letting up four runs (three earned) on seven hits. Jim Ed Warden pitched a scoreless ninth inning to pick up his 21st save.
Joash Brodin and Dan Lyons led the Ducks with two hits apiece.
The Ducks continue their series against the Blue Crabs on Monday night. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m., with the Bethpage Ballpark gates opening at 6:05. The first 1,500 fans through the gates will receive Foam Fingers, presented by People’s Alliance Federal Credit Union. Right-hander Nick DeBarr takes the mound for the Ducks against Blue Crabs southpaw Wade Korpi.

Duck Tales: Joash Brodin posted his team-high 25th two-hit game and team-high 34th multi-hit game of the season. The switch-hitter raised his average to .331, which is third best in the Atlantic League behind Somerset’s Eddy Martinez-Esteve (.341) and Lancaster’s Jerry Owens (.340)…Dan Lyons recorded his 12th two-hit game of 2013 and his 13th multi-hit game of the season…Dontrelle Willis posted his third complete game of the year, tying him for second in the Atlantic League in that category. Teammate John Brownell leads the league with four complete games on the year. In his last five starts, the southpaw is 3-2 with a 1.54 ERA…The game was played in just two hours and 13 minutes, the shortest nine inning game of the season for the Ducks. Before today, the shortest Ducks game was 2:19, which occurred twice. The shortest home game was 2:28, which also occurred twice…The 11:07 a.m. start was the first home game in Ducks history to start before noon.
