(Waldorf, Md., Sept. 14, 2021) – The Long Island Ducks were defeated by the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs 6-4 on Tuesday evening in the opener of a three-game midweek series at Regency Furniture Stadium.
Long Island went right to work in the top half of the first inning versus Southern Maryland starting pitcher Daryl Thompson, scoring four times by way of five consecutive hits to open up an immediate 4-0 advantage, highlighted by an RBI two-base hit off the bat of Deibinson Romero, a run-scoring base knock produced by Chris Shaw, and a two-run double from Hector Sanchez. The Blue Crabs cut the deficit to 4-1 in the home half of the second against Ducks starter Anderson DeLeon when Zach Collier plated David Harris with a sacrifice fly after Harris led off the frame with a triple into the right field corner.
Southern Maryland sent eight batters to the plate in the home half of the fourth and tied the game at four as Joe DeLuca doubled home a pair and Collier hustled down the line from third base on a wild pitch thrown by Ducks reliever Ricky Eusebio which produced the tying run. The Blue Crabs scored twice in the last of the fifth and never looked back as Harris doubled in a run and Collier followed with a seeing-eye RBI single to give the game its final score of 6-4.
DeLeon tallied a no-decision, giving up four runs on three hits in three and two-thirds innings of work, walking two while striking out five and hitting a batter. Thompson (12-3) picked up the victory, allowing four runs on ten hits across eight innings pitched, walking and striking out two. Eusebio (0-1) suffered the loss, surrendering two runs on three hits in one and one-third innings while throwing a wild pitch. Mat Latos closed the ballgame out in the ninth for his team-best 20th save in as many tries. Lew Ford led the way offensively with three hits for the Flock.
