Southern Maryland collects 12 hits in first win over Flock since April

(Waldorf, Md., August 28, 2015) – The Long Island Ducks were defeated by the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs 5-2 on Friday night in the second game of a four-game series at Regency Furniture Stadium.

The Blue Crabs took an early 1-0 lead in the first inning when Bryan Nelson hit a RBI single off Ducks starter John Brownell. Keith Castillo’s RBI single in the fourth put the home team up 2-0.

Dan Lyons got Long Island on the scoreboard with a sacrifice fly against Blue Crabs starter Tim Sexton in the sixth inning. In the home half of the frame, Southern Maryland posted three runs to go on top 5-1. A RBI infield single from Castillo and a two-run single to center for Fred Lewis off Ducks reliever Donnie Veal did the damage. All three runs in the inning were charged to Brownell.

Long Island was able to scratch out a run in the ninth on Anthony Vega’s RBI triple against Blue Crabs reliever Orlando Santos. However, they would not complete the comeback.

Brownell (10-4) suffered the loss. He allowed five runs on 11 hits in five and two-thirds innings while walking one and striking out six. Sexton (1-0) picked up the win, surrendering one run (unearned) on five hits in six innings. He walked one and struck out seven. Patrick Crider threw a scoreless inning of relief in the eighth for Long Island.

Sean Burroughs finished with three hits for the Ducks, while Randy Ruiz had a pair as well.

Long Island continues their four-game set with the Blue Crabs on Saturday night. Game time is scheduled for 6:35 p.m. from Regency Furniture Stadium. The Ducks will return home on Tuesday, September 1 to begin a three-game series with the Bluefish. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m., with the Bethpage Ballpark gates opening at 5:35 (5:20 for full season ticket holders.
