(Waldorf, Md., July 31, 2012) – The Long Island Ducks were defeated by the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs 5-4 in 10 innings on Tuesday night in the second game of a four-game series at Regency Furniture Stadium.

Long Island scored the game’s first run on a sacrifice fly to center by Ray Navarrete in the first inning off Blue Crabs starter Daryl Thompson. Southern Maryland tied it in the bottom of the frame on a RBI single by Casey Benjamin off Ducks starter Chris Hayes.

The Ducks grabbed the lead right back in the second on an opposite field two-run homer by Shawn Williams, his sixth of the year. Long Island would add another in the ninth to take a 4-1 lead, but a three-run bottom of the ninth inning for the Blue Crabs tied the game at four.

Southern Maryland loaded the bases with two out in the 10th, and a walk to Jeremy Owens brought home the winning run.

Both starters pitched well, but neither factored into the decision. Hayes fired six innings of five-hit, one-run baseball with five strikeouts, and Thompson threw six innings, allowing three runs on five hits with six strikeouts. Charlie Manning (3-3) got the win despite allowing a run on two hits in two innings of relief, while Jared Lansford (0-1) suffered the loss, yielding the winning run on a hit and three walks in two-thirds of an inning.

The Ducks and Blue Crabs play the third game of their four-game set on Wednesday morning. Game time is slated for 11:05 a.m. from Regency Furniture Stadium.
