Two-run seventh leads Southern Maryland past Long Island

(Waldorf, Md., August 7, 2014) – The Long Island Ducks were defeated by the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs 2-1 on Thursday evening in the middle game of a three-game series at Regency Furniture Stadium.

Long Island took a 1-0 lead in the top of the fifth inning on a two-out RBI single from Adam Bailey off Blue Crabs reliever Wade Korpi.

Southern Maryland took the lead in the bottom of the seventh inning with a pair of runs off Ducks reliever Jon Meloan. A RBI single from Amadeo Zazueta and a run-scoring error off the bat of Jermaine Mitchell did the damage.

Neither starting pitcher factored into the decision. Ducks starter Mitch Talbot tossed six scoreless innings, yielding five hits and two walks with three strikeouts. Blue Crabs starter Jake Brown went three and one-third scoreless innings while allowing three hits and two walks with three strikeouts. Korpi (4-2) earned the win with three scoreless innings of relief. Meloan took the loss after allowing two runs on a hit and two walks without recording an out. Anthony Slama earned his fifth save of the year with a scoreless ninth inning.

Brendan Harris and Bailey each led the Ducks with two hits.

Long Island will conclude its three-game series against the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs Friday. Game time is slated for 7:05 p.m. from Regency Furniture Stadium. Long Island will return home on Tuesday, August 12 to kick off a six-game homestand with the opener of a three-game series against the Sugar Land Skeeters.
