Ducks rally to tie game in ninth but fall in extras
 

(Central Islip, N.Y., Aug. 29, 2019) – The Long Island Ducks were defeated by the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs 2-1 in 10 innings on Thursday night in the finale of a four-game series at Bethpage Ballpark.

The first run of the game came in the top of the seventh inning when Charlie Valerio hit a one-out solo home run to right-center field. Long Island rallied to tie the game in the ninth. Lew Ford walked, L.J. Mazzilli singled to left field, and Hector Sanchez blooped an RBI single to left, evening the scored at one.

Southern Maryland took the lead back in the 10th inning when Rubi Silva was sacrificed to third base on a bunt and scored on a two-out wild pitch.

Neither starter factored into the decision. Daryl Thompson went eight and two-thirds innings for the Blue Crabs, allowing just one run on four hits and two walks while striking out three. Ducks starter Joe Iorio yielded only one run on six hits and two walks over seven innings while striking out a season-high seven batters. Mat Latos (4-4) collected the win with one and one-third innings of relief, giving up two hits. Pedro Beato (3-3) suffered the hard-luck loss, conceding the winning run on in one inning with two strikeouts.

Mazzilli led the Flock with two hits, while Ford added a hit and two walks.

 

The Ducks continue their homestand on Friday night when they open a three-game series against the Somerset Patriots. Game time is slated for 6:35 p.m., with the Bethpage Ballpark gates opening at 5:35 (5:20 for full season ticket holders). It’s Hispanic Heritage Night at the ballpark, presented by Adelante of Suffolk County, and the first 1,500 fans in attendance will receive Ducks Mini Beach Balls. The Ducks will be wearing commemorative “Los Patos” jerseys during the game, and fans will be able to bid on these game-worn uniforms by visiting the auction tables located outside the Waddle In Shop. Right-hander Vin Mazzaro (7-4, 4.46) gets the start for the Ducks against Patriots lefty Zack Dodson (1-1, 3.26).
