Long Island drops series for the first time in second half

(Bridgeport, Conn, July 28, 2013) – The Long Island Ducks were defeated by the Bridgeport Bluefish 4-1 on Sunday afternoon in the finale of a four-game series at The Ballpark at Harbor Yard.

Bridgeport opened the scoring on a Prentice Redman sacrifice fly in the bottom of the third inning. The Bluefish doubled their lead on a Stantrel Smith sacrifice fly in the fourth.

The Bluefish pushed another run across in the fifth inning when Ducks starter Bill Murphy walked in a run. Long Island touched Bridgeport starter Hunter Jones for the first time in the sixth, scoring on a groundout. Luis Lopez blasted a home run in the seventh inning to put the Bluefish lead back to three.

Jones (5-9) picked up the win, allowing one run on two hits in six innings. Murphy (2-11) suffered the loss, letting up three runs (one earned) on four hits in five innings. Winston Abreu pitched a scoreless ninth inning to pick up his second save.

Bill Hall led the Ducks with two hits.

Long Island returns home on Monday to take on the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs. Game time is slated for 7:05 p.m., with the Bethpage Ballpark gates opening at 6:05. It’s Irish Night at the ballpark, and Souvenir Cups will go out to the first 1,500 fans, courtesy of Shandon Court. Left-hander James Houser starts for the Ducks against a Blue Crabs starter yet to be named.
