Right-hander honored by Atlantic League

(Central Islip, N.Y., July 1, 2013) – The Atlantic League of Professional Baseball today announced that Long Island Ducks right-handed pitcher John Brownell has been named the League’s Player of the Week for the week of June 24-30. It marks the first time in 2013 that a Ducks player has won the honor.

“John has continued to be a key part of our starting rotation,” said Ducks manager Kevin Baez. “We are proud of him for what he accomplished this week and are eager to watch him pitch throughout the second half of the season.”

Brownell earned victories in both of his starts this past week against the Bridgeport Bluefish and Somerset Patriots. On Monday, June 24, the righty threw a complete game in game two of a doubleheader against the Bluefish. In seven innings, he allowed just one run on six hits and a walk while striking out six Bluefish batters. The second-year Duck followed that up with six shutout innings on Saturday, June 29 against the Patriots, yielding just three and three walks with seven strikeouts.

The South Dakota native ranks second in the Atlantic League with 69 strikeouts, just one behind York southpaw Chris Cody, and sits ninth with a 3.66 ERA this season. His 14 games started and three complete games are tied for the league lead, and he ranks third with 83 and two-thirds innings pitched. The 30-year-old is also tied with fellow-starter James Houser for the team lead in victories with six. Brownell joined the Ducks near the end of the 2012 season and posted a 2-2 record in four regular season games (three starts). Brownell then shined in the playoffs, compiling a 2.84 ERA in two starts en route to the Ducks’ second Atlantic League championship in franchise history.

Long Island returns home on Tuesday, July 2 to open the second half with the first game of a three-game series against the Patriots. Game time is slated for 7:05 p.m., with the Bethpage Ballpark gates opening at 6:05. Following the game, all fans in attendance will be treated to the first of three consecutive Grucci Fireworks Extravaganzas, presented by The Rinx at Hidden Pond Park.
