Becomes second player in Atlantic League history to reach milestone

(Central Islip, N.Y., June 20, 2018) – The Long Island Ducks were defeated by the Sugar Land Skeeters 4-3 on Wednesday night in the finale of a three-game series at Bethpage Ballpark. In the loss, John Brownell recorded the 700th strikeout of his Ducks career, making him only the second pitcher in Atlantic League history to achieve that milestone (Tim Cain, 737).

Sugar Land built a 2-0 lead with single runs in the third and fourth innings off Ducks starter John Brownell. A two-out RBI double by Derek Norris and a two-out RBI single by Kyle Kubitza did the damage. Long Island answered back to tie the game with single runs in the fourth and fifth off Skeeters starter Konner Wade. RBI doubles Lew Ford and Emilio Bonifacio evened the score at two.

The Skeeters took the lead back in the sixth on Matt Chavez’ solo home run to right field, but Taylor Ard’s solo homer to left in the bottom of the frame pulled the Flock back even again.

Alvaro Rondo’s two-out RBI single to center in the seventh gave Sugar Land the advantage for good at 4-3. Long Island put the tying run on second base in the eighth and ninth but could not pull even.

Wade (3-1) earned the win, pitching seven innings, allowing three runs (two earned) on eight hits and one walk while striking out three. Brownell (3-6) suffered the loss, yielding four runs on eight hits and a walk over seven innings with four strikeouts. Felipe Paulino collected his 15th save with a scoreless ninth despite allowing two walks.

Ford, Travis Snider and Anthony Vega each had two hits to pace the Flock.

The Ducks hit the road on Thursday to begin a four-game series against the Lancaster Barnstormers. First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. at Clipper Magazine Stadium. Fans can follow all the action on the Long Island Ducks Broadcast Network. Live streaming HD video and audio will be available via BoxCast on the Ducks official Facebook page, YouTube channel and at LIDucks.com. Right-hander Matt Larkins (5-1, 2.75) gets the start for the Ducks against Barnstormers righty Brooks Hall (3-2, 4.22).
