Veteran right-hander earns ninth victory of the season

(Lancaster, Pa., Aug. 29, 2016) – The Long Island Ducks defeated the Lancaster Barnstormers 4-1 on Monday night in the opener of a five-game set at Clipper Magazine Stadium.

Ducks starter John Brownell (9-6) turned in a quality start, allowing one run on four hits with three strikeouts and three walks over seven innings. Matt Wessinger’s run-scoring infield single gave Long Island a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Anthony Vega’s fifth-inning solo home run made it 2-0. In the seventh, Dan Lyons added a two-run double down the third base line.

Brownell’s lone mistake came in the seventh when Kevin Ahrens hit a solo home run to left-center field.

Joey Maher (1-2) suffered the loss, allowing three runs on five hits and three walks with three strikeouts in six innings. Todd Coffey collected his 23rd save of the season, despite allowing two hits in the ninth.

Both Lyons and Wessinger collected two hits apiece, while Vega stole two bases.

The Ducks and Barnstormers continue their series on Tuesday with a single admission doubleheader composed of two seven-inning games. First pitch is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. at Clipper Magazine Stadium. Long Island returns home on Monday, September 5 to open a four-game set with the Bridgeport Bluefish. Game time is slated for 1:35 p.m. in a special Labor Day matinee, with the Bethpage Ballpark gates opening at 12:35 (12:20 for full season ticket holders).
