Pitcher claims 2013 Ducks/Delmonte-Smelson MVP award

(Central Islip, N.Y., Sept. 12, 2013) – On Thursday, September 12, which was Fan Appreciation Day presented by Long Island Pepsi, the Long Island Ducks announced that pitcher John Brownell has been named the 2013 Ducks/Delmonte-Smelson Most Valuable Player. The right hander was chosen via fan voting on the Ducks’ official website, www.liducks.com, out of four nominees for the award.

Brownell is the Atlantic League’s leader in complete games with seven, three more than any other player in the league, and also leads the way with two shutouts. The second-year Duck ranks second in strikeouts with 133, four shy of York’s Chris Cody, and third in innings pitched with 166.1, trailing Lancaster’s Dwayne Pollok by 6.1 innings.

Brownell is also the team leader in wins with nine and has a 3.90 ERA, good for ninth in the league. He has started 26 games overall and opponents are hitting just .265 against him. He twice struck out nine batters in a game this year, doing so on May 5 at York and July 22 at Camden. The 30-year-old beat out teammates Bryant Nelson, Adam Bailey and Jared Lansford in the fan vote.
