Four-run first, five-run third topple Ducks

(Camden, N.J., May 23, 2013) – The Long Island Ducks were defeated by the Camden Riversharks 10-4 on Thursday night in the final game of a four-game series at Campbell’s Field.

Camden jumped on the scoreboard with four runs in the first inning off Ducks starter Connor Graham. Paddy Matera’s solo home run and Eduardo Perez’s three-run homer did the damage. A five-spot in the third, highlighted by a three-run blast from Juan Martinez, extended the lead to nine.

Long Island rallied back for four runs in the sixth inning off Riversharks starter Brian Bass. Bryant Nelson launched a three-run homer, and Dan Lyons connected for a RBI single in the frame. However, that was all the Ducks offense could muster.

Bass (2-5) picked up the win, tossing six innings, allowing four runs on 10 hits while striking out six. Graham (2-2) suffered the loss, surrendering seven runs on six hits in just two and two-thirds innings.

Lyons, Joash Brodin, Ray Navarrete and Rian Kiniry each had two hits to lead the offense.

The Ducks return home on Friday to host the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs for a three-game set. Game time is set for 7:05 p.m., with the Bethpage Ballpark gates opening at 6:05. It’s “Don’t Fry Day” with Skin Cancer Awareness, and the first 1,500 fans in attendance will receive Ducks Mini Bats, courtesy of Stony Brook Children’s Hospital. MLB veteran Dontrelle Willis takes the mound for Long Island against Blue Crabs southpaw Jeremy Sowers.
