Three run ninth leads Flock over Barnstormers

(Lancaster, Penn., May 9, 2014) – The Long Island Ducks defeated the Lancaster Barnstormers 10-8 on Friday night in the first game of a three-game series at Clipper Magazine Stadium.

Long Island jumped out to an early lead with five runs in the first inning off Lancaster starter Cody Scarpetta. The first six batters of the game reached base safely, highlighted by a RBI double from Lew Ford, a throwing error from Scarpetta which led to a run, a RBI single from Ryan Strieby and a RBI sacrifice fly from Anthony Armenio. The Ducks added two more runs the next inning on a two-run home run from Joash Brodin, his first of the season.

Lancaster did not go down quietly, however. Three-run home runs from Barnstormers outfielders Cole Garner and Blake Gailen off Ducks starter Shaun Garceau brought Lancaster back within one after five innings. Lancaster grabbed an 8-7 lead in the eighth off Jeremy Accardo on a RBI double from Garner and a RBI single from Brock Kjeldgaard.

The Flock responded in the ninth against Barnstormers closer Pete Andrelczyk with three runs to regain the lead for good. Adam Bailey launched a solo home run with one out to tie the game. Five batters later, after Andrelcyzk walked three Ducks batters and was chased from the game, Fehlandt Lentini blooped a two-run, two-out base hit to shallow right field, giving the Ducks the lead for good.

Neither starter factored into the decision. Garceau allowed six runs (all earned) over five innings on seven hits, two walks, and two strikeouts. Scarpetta allowed seven runs (five earned) over five innings on eight hits, three walks and three strikeouts. Jeremy Accardo (3-1) earned the win after working one inning of relief, while Andrelczyk (0-2) took the loss after allowing three runs in two-thirds of an inning. Leo Rosales earned his fifth save of the season with a scoreless ninth inning.

Lentini led the Flock with five hits, one run scored and two RBI while Ford chipped in with two hits, two runs and one RBI.
