Three more runs in the fifth inning off Blue Crabs starter Wade Korpi extended the lead to five. Josh Barfield’s two-run homer and Adam Bailey’s RBI single did the damage.
Southern Maryland cut the deficit to three on a two-run homer to right by Jose Julio-Ruiz off Ducks starter Nick DeBarr. A solo home run to right in the eighth by Jake Opitz and a RBI groundout by Jose Salas in the ninth made it a one-run game, but the Blue Crabs could not pull even.
DeBarr (1-6) earned the win, tossing seven innings, allowing just two runs on two hits while striking out four. Korpi (2-3) took the loss, surrendering five runs (four earned) on seven hits in five and two-thirds innings. Jared Lansford earned his fifth save of the year despite allowing a run in the ninth.
Nelson, Bailey and Ray Navarrete each had two hits to lead the Flock.
