Southpaw strikes out 10 to lead Long Island in series opener

(Central Islip, N.Y., Sept. 7, 2021) – The Long Island Ducks shut out the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs 9-0 on Tuesday night in the opening game of a three-game series at Fairfield Properties Ballpark.

The Ducks took an early 1-0 lead in the first inning on a bases loaded walk by Chris Shaw. It stayed that way until the fifth when RBI singles by Vladimir Frias and Lew Ford off Blue Crabs starter Misael Siverio extended the advantage to three.

L.J. Mazzilli doubled to right-center in the seventh, scoring Frias, to make it a 4-0 ballgame. Five more runs came home in the ninth to round out the scoring for the Flock. Sal Giardina’s solo home run to right-center. Frias’ RBI fielder’s choice, a fielding error that scored Frias and Steve Lombardozzi and an RBI single by Deibinson Romero did the damage.

Ducks starter Darin Downs (3-4) was outstanding to earn the win. He tossed seven scoreless innings, allowing just two hits and three walks while striking out a season-high-tying 10 batters. Siverio (1-6) took the loss, conceding four runs on nine hits and three walks over seven innings with six strikeouts. Dylan Peiffer tossed a pair of scoreless innings in relief for the Ducks.

Frias led the Flock offensively with three hits, two RBIs and four runs scored. Mazzilli added three hits, an RBI and a run, while Giardina and Johnni Turbo each chipped in with two hits.
