Dominant pitching, two-homer day from Songco leads Flock

(Central Islip, N.Y., April 17, 2017) – The Long Island Ducks defeated the Long Island Black Sox 14-0 on Monday afternoon in a spring training game at Bethpage Ballpark.

Long Island’s offense got started in the first inning on a sacrifice fly to center field by Angelo Songco. Four more runs came across in the third to increase the lead to 5-0. A two-run home run to right field by Songco and a two-run single to left by Alex Burg did the damage.

The Ducks added two runs in the fourth on a two-run homer to right by Marc Krauss. A tremendous day at the plate continued when Long Island scored twice more in the sixth and seventh innings to balloon the lead to 11-0. Opposite-field RBI singles by Delta Cleary Jr. and Giovanny Alfonzo, a run-scoring wild pitch and Songco’s second home run of the day highlighted the scoring.

Three more runs in the eighth rounded out the offense for the Ducks. Nate Freiman scored on a fielding error, Alfonzo came across on a wild pitch, and Elmer Reyes added a sac fly.

On the mound, seven Ducks pitchers combined to allow just five hits and three walks while striking out 14 batters. Elmont resident Keith Couch started and pitched three scoreless innings, striking out two. Major League veterans David Aardsma and Chin-Hui Tsao also appeared and tosses scoreless frames, with Aardsma striking out two and Tsao striking out the side. Jim Fuller, Zac Treece, Dennis O’Grady and Amalio Diaz pitched shutout innings as well for the Ducks.

Every Ducks batter collected at least one hit in the game. Songco led the way with two hits, four RBI and two runs. Fehlandt Lentini also contributed a pair of hits, scored three times and stole three bases.
