GAME AUDIO: Highlights from the dramatic extra inning victory
Southern Maryland opened the scoring in the second inning against Ducks starter Mark Blackmar with a solo home run to left field by Michael Snyder and an RBI fielder’s choice from D’Arby Myers. Long Island would tie the game in the seventh against Blue Crabs starter Gaby Hernandez. Cody Puckett drove in a run with a two-out single to center then scored on a double by Blake Tekotte coupled with a throwing error.
It stayed 2-2 until the top of the inning when the Ducks struck for two more two-out runs to take the lead for good. An RBI single by Mike Dowd and an RBI double by Matt Wessinger put Long Island on top 4-2.
Neither starter factored into the decision. Blackmar tossed seven innings of two-run ball, allowing four hits and one walk while striking out five. Hernandez also pitched seven innings, giving up two runs (one earned) on four hits and a walk with eight strikeouts. Frank DeJiulio Jr. (2-0) collected the win after recording the final out of the 10th, stranding the winning run in scoring position. Robert Carson (0-1) took the loss, yielding two runs on one hit and one walk in two-thirds of an inning. Eury De La Rosa earned his first save of the season with a scoreless 11th inning.
Dowd and Fehlandt Lentini led the Flock with two hits apiece.
