Long Island outscores Southern Maryland 14-2

(Waldorf, Md., May 1, 2014) – The Long Island Ducks swept a doubleheader from the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs on Thursday afternoon at Regency Furniture Stadium, taking the opener 11-1 before winning game two 3-1.

GAME ONE HIGHLIGHTS: Key hits in Long Island’s 11-run attack

GAME TWO HIGHLIGHTS: Keith Castillo’s two-run homer and Dan Lyons’ RBI single

The Ducks exploded to an early 5-0 lead in the third inning of game one against Blue Crabs starter Ian Marshall. A RBI double by Dan Lyons and RBI singles by Joash Brodin and Fehlandt Lentini highlighted the inning. After a solo homer by Johnny Bowden in the third, three more runs in the fourth for Long Island on a two-run double by Lentini and a RBI single by Lew Ford extended the lead to 8-1.

Long Island capped the scoring in the sixth on Ford’s three-run homer to left. Ford led the Flock with five RBI while he, Lentini, Brodin and Brian Peacock each had two hits.

Matt Way (1-0) earned the win, allowing just one run on two hits while striking out six in five innings. Marshall (0-1) took the loss after giving up eight runs (four earned) on eight hits in four innings.

Southern Maryland struck first in game two on a first inning RBI single by C.J. Ziegler off Ducks starter Fernando Hernandez. However, Keith Castillo answered back in the second with a two-run homer to left-center off Blue Crabs starter Brian Burres. A RBI single by Lyons in the top of the fifth increased the lead to 3-1.

Hernandez did not factor into the decision but tossed four innings of one-run ball, allowing five hits while striking out two. Jeremy Accardo (1-0) earned the win in relief with one and one-third perfect innings. Burres (0-1) suffered the loss, yielding three runs (two earned) on four hits in five innings. Leo Rosales earned his second save with a perfect seventh inning.

Ryan Strieby led the Flock with two hits in game two.
