(Central Islip, N.Y., Aug. 31, 2025) – Fairfield Properties Ballpark, the home of the Long Island Ducks, played host to a special softball game between the MTA Express and the Port Authority Police Department Twins prior to the Ducks game that day against the York Revolution.

The special event was preceded by a ceremony that began with the entrans of the combined PAPD and MTA Pipe Band. The Joint Honor Guard presented our nation’s colors while the National Anthem was sung by PAPD Police Officer Michelle Nichols. Following the Anthem, a flyover took place by the Suffolk County Police Department’s Aviation Unit.

Following opening remarks by the event’s emcee, PAPD Officer Brandon Busch, a brief presentation was made to Miller & Caggiano, Bulova’s Restorations and Shelter Rock Financial, each of whom sponsored the game. Remarks were also made by Senator Monica Martinez and Assemblyman Michael Durso recognizing those in attendance.

To culminate the ceremony, a ceremonial first pitch was thrown out by widow Kerry Varvaro and the children of fallen PAPD Police Officer Anthony Varvaro. Anthony passed away at the age of 37 on September 11, 2022, in a head-on collision while on the way to serve at the World Trade Center Command in commemoration of the September 11th attacks. Also taking part in the first pitch ceremony was Liam Haber, son of MTA PD Police K9 Officer Tom Haber. Liam was diagnosed with Hunters Syndrome. Austin Glickman from Law Enforcement Officers Weekend presented both families with gifts.

All proceeds from the game will benefit The Anthony Varvaro Believe Foundation, Snug Harbor LIttle League and the MPS Society. Hundreds of fans attended the game and cheered on those taking part.
