Patriots edge Ducks in 15 innings
(Bridgewater, N.J., April 25, 2014) – The Long Island Ducks were defeated by the Somerset Patriots 3-2 in 15 innings on Friday night in the opening game of the 2014 regular season at TD Bank Ballpark.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS: Long Island plates two runs in the fourth inning
Somerset grabbed the game’s first run in the bottom of the second inning on a solo home run to right field by Dennis Raben off of Ducks starter John Brownell. Long Island answered with two runs in the fourth against Patriots starter Erik Arnesen on a sacrifice fly to right by Lew Ford and a RBI single to left by Ryan Strieby.
It stayed that way until the bottom of the sixth when Nate Spears plated Jonny Tucker with a run-scoring triple to right. Both teams then traded zeroes until the 15th inning when Tucker won the game with a two-out double to left.
Neither starter factored in the decision. Brownell tossed six innings, allowing two runs on four hits while striking out five. Arnesen lasted seven innings, yielding two runs on five hits with eight strikeouts. Derell McCall (1-0) picked up the win, tossing two scoreless innings of relief. Casey Barnes (0-1) suffered the loss, yielding the winning run in two-thirds of an inning.
Strieby and Chris McClendon led the Flock with two hits apiece.
