Mazzilli totals four hits and five runs, while Sanchez homers twice and drives in five

(Lancaster, Pa., June 29, 2021) – The Long Island Ducks defeated the Lancaster Barnstormers 19-18 on Tuesday night in the opener of a three-game series at Clipper Magazine Stadium.

The Ducks scored in each of their first six innings at the plate, including six runs in the first inning, four in the fourth, three in the fifth and four in the sixth. L.J. Mazzilli’s RBI single, a two-run single by Deibinson Romero and a three-run home run by Hector Sanchez helped the Flock build an early lead in the first.

Lancaster took a 13-7 lead with a five-run first inning and an eight-run second. Kelly Dugan’s two-run single, Blake Allemand’s three-run homer, a two-run single by Trayvon Robinson and a three-run single by Anthony Peroni highlighted the scoring.

Long Island closed to within 13-12 behind a solo homer from Sanchez, an RBI double by Ryan Jackson and an RBI single by Sanchez. The Ducks went in front 15-13 in the fifth, led by Corey Howard’s RBI single, a run-scoring error and Jackson’s RBI groundout. After the Barnstormers tied it at 15 in the bottom of the fifth, Long Island took the lead back with a two-run ground rule double by Mazzilli and a pinch-hit two-run single by Jesse Berardi.

The Barnstormers tried to rally back, scoring single runs in the sixth, seventh and ninth innings. However, Michael Tonkin stranded the tying run at first base to end the game in the ninth.

Neither starter factored into the decision. Brendan Feldmann lasted one and two-thirds innings for the Ducks, allowing 13 runs on nine hits and seven walks. Andro Cutura pitched three innings for the Barnstormers, conceding 12 runs (11 earned) on 11 hits and three walks. Jheondri Herrera (1-0) picked up the win despite allowing a run on one hit in two-thirds of an inning. Yoel Espinal (1-4) took the loss, surrendering three runs on a hit and two walks in two-thirds of an inning. Tonkin earned his fifth save, recording the final five outs and yielding a run on two hits with three strikeouts.

Mazzilli and Sanchez each had four hits to lead the offense. Mazzilli drove in three runs while scoring five times, while Sanchez collected five RBIs and two runs. Johnni Turbo added three hits and two runs, while Jackson and Romero drove in three runs apiece.

The Ducks and Barnstormers continue their three-game set on Wednesday night. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. at Clipper Magazine Stadium.
