Long Island wins pitcher’s duel to open series

(Camden, N.J., Aug. 19, 2013) – The Long Island Ducks defeated the Camden Riversharks 2-1 in 14 innings on Monday night in the opener of a three-game series at Campbell’s Field.

GAME AUDIO: Highlights from the wild extra inning victory

Both starters pitched well, but neither factored into the decision. Ducks starter Bob Zimmermann tossed six scoreless innings, allowing just seven hits and two walks while striking out two. Riversharks starter Aaron Tullo pitched nine innings of one-hit ball, surrendering just three walks while striking out six.

Neither side was able to push across a run until the top of the 13th inning. Two Riversharks errors, a sacrifice bunt by Bryant Nelson and a RBI groundout by Bill Hall gave the Ducks a 1-0 lead. Raul Padron immediately tied the game with a first pitch solo homer to right in the bottom of the frame.

Long Island responded right back in the 14th inning to take the lead for good. Adam Bailey singled to right field with one out, and Ralph Henriquez scored from second when Chris Walker misplayed the ball in right.

Jared Lansford (5-1) earned the win despite allowing one run on two hits and a walk in one inning of relief. Former Duck Rusty Jones (0-3) suffered the loss, yielding and unearned run on two hits in one inning. Bill Murphy earned his first save of the year with a perfect bottom of the 14th inning.

Bailey led the Ducks with two hits. Long Island’s bullpen combined to allow just one run on six hits in eight innings of work, walking three batters while striking out two.

The Ducks and Riversharks continue their three-game set on Tuesday night. First pitch from Campbell’s Field is slated for 7:05 p.m. Fans can follow all the action live online, with streaming video and audio available on the Ducks official YouTube channel, youtube.com/ducksbaseball. Right-hander John Brownell gets the start for the Ducks against Riversharks righty Scott Gorgen.

Long Island returns home on Thursday, August 22 when they battle the Somerset Patriots. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m., with the Bethpage Ballpark gates opening at 6:05. The first 1,500 fans in attendance will receive Buddy Harrelson Bobbleheads, courtesy of Dantona Industries. Tickets for the game and all Ducks regular season home games are now on sale.
