Flock hold visitors to three runs, wins by multiple of three as #3 jersey is retired
(Central Islip, N.Y., Aug. 3, 2018) – The Long Island Ducks defeated the Road Warriors 9-3 on Friday night in the second game of a four-game series at Bethpage Ballpark. Prior to the game, the Ducks held a special ceremony to honor baseball legend and Ducks co-owner/coach Bud Harrelson for all that he has done for the Ducks organization and Long Island. The festivities were highlighted by the retirement of his #3 Ducks jersey.
Travis Snider gave the Ducks a 1-0 lead in the first inning with an RBI single to right field. David Washington’s solo home run to left in the second off Road Warriors starter Michael Lee extended the advantage to two.
Long Island doubled their lead to four in the fourth on Ramon Cabrera’s two-out RBI double to right and a throwing error that scored Cabrera. Gustavo Pierre trimmed the Road Warriors deficit to 4-2 in the sixth with a two-run homer to right off Ducks starter Matt Larkins.
However, a five-run bottom of the sixth for the Flock put the game out of reach at 9-2. Back-to-back errors that scored Taylor Ard and Washington started the scoring, and Jordany Valdespin capped it with a three-run homer to right field.
Larkins (6-3) earned the win, tossing six and two-thirds innings of three-run ball, allowing nine hits and no walks while striking out seven. Lee (2-7) took the loss, yielding nine runs (three earned) on 10 hits over six innings with five strikeouts. Three Ducks relievers combined to give up just one hit over two and one-third scoreless innings to finish the game.
Valdespin led the Flock with two hits, three RBIs and two runs scored. Washington added two hits, an RBI and scored twice.
The Ducks and Road Warriors continue their four-game set on Saturday night. Game time is slated for 6:35 p.m., with the Bethpage Ballpark gates opening at 5:35 (5:20 for full season ticket holders). Following the game, all fans in attendance will be treated to a Fireworks Spectacular, which will light the sky over the center field wall, presented by Memorial Sloan Kettering. In addition, Ducks staff members will be handing out coupons for $10 off a purchase of $50 or more at Dick’s Sporting Goods to fans as they exit the ballpark following the fireworks show. Right-hander John Brownell (7-8, 4.33) toes the rubber for the Ducks against Road Warriors righty Raul Rivera-Alicea (3-10, 3.97).
