2014 roster now at 16 players
(Central Islip, N.Y., March 18, 2014) – The Long Island Ducks today announced that they have signed right-handed pitcher Fernando Hernandez and infielder Sergio Miranda. Both players begin their first season with the Ducks.
“We are very excited to add these two versatile players to our team,” says Ducks president and general manager Michael Pfaff. “Fernando brings a quality arm that can contribute in several roles on our pitching staff, while Sergio will serve as a utility infielder for us.”
Hernandez has spent two seasons in the Atlantic League, most recently with the Somerset Patriots in 2013. The righty pitched in seven games and tossed nine scoreless innings while earning a victory. He also appeared in three postseason contests, hurling three and two-thirds scoreless frames. The Miami native previously pitched in 13 games with the Camden Riversharks in 2011 and was 1-0 with a 2.08 ERA and one save.
The 29-year-old reached the Major Leagues with the Oakland Athletics in 2008. He pitched in three games and earned the win in his big league debut with a scoreless inning against the Toronto Blue Jays. He has also spent time in the Chicago White Sox, New York Yankees and Blue Jays organizations and has compiled 44-44 career record with a 3.83 ERA and 67 saves in 462 games (24 starts). Hernandez was originally drafted by the White Sox in the 49th round of the 2002 amateur draft.
Miranda has played six seasons of professional baseball. The 27-year-old spent the first two years of his career in the White Sox organization, reaching as high as Single-A Winston-Salem. He was then traded to the Milwaukee Brewers organization and advanced to the Double-A Huntsville in 2011 after two strong seasons with Single-A Brevard County. The Virginia native has spent time at every infield position during his career and has a .963 career fielding percentage. Miranda was originally drafted by the White Sox in the 13th round of the 2007 amateur draft.
