Long Island adds former Orioles draft pick to pitching staff

(Central Islip, N.Y., Feb. 20, 2018) – The Long Island Ducks today announced the signing of left-handed pitcher Bennett Parry. He will begin his first season with the Ducks and eighth in professional baseball.

“Bennett has posted strong numbers throughout his career,” said Ducks President/GM Michael Pfaff. “His career versatility as both a starting pitcher and a reliever will be an asset to our pitching staff.”

Parry joins the Flock after spending the past two seasons with the Lincoln Saltdogs of the American Association. He started 13 games in 2017 and compiled a 3-2 record with a 1.93 ERA, 62 strikeouts and a .241 opponents’ batting average over 79 and one-third innings of work. The 26-year-old turned in six quality starts during the season, yielded just five earned runs in his first seven regular season starts (1.13 ERA) and surrendered only one run in 16 innings during his final two starts. He was limited to four starts in 2016, going 1-0 with a 3.24 ERA.

The San Diego native spent the first five seasons of his professional career in the Baltimore Orioles organization. In 64 games (31 starts), he posted a 2.71 ERA, one save and 211 strikeouts to just 79 walks over 216 innings of work. The California State University Northridge alum totaled career-highs in strikeouts (69), appearances (22) and games started (10) in 2014 when he split time with Single-A affiliates Aberdeen and Delmarva. Parry was originally drafted by the Orioles in the 40th round of the 2011 amateur draft.
