11-run effort highlights series opener
(Waldorf, Md., June 6, 2014) – The Long Island Ducks defeated the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs 11-6 Friday night at Regency Furniture Stadium in the first game of a five-game series.
GAME AUDIO: Highlights from the Ducks 11-run outburst
The Ducks grabbed the early lead thanks to a six run top of the third inning off Blue Crabs starter Gabriel Hernandez. Cody Puckett started the scoring with a bases-loaded, two-run single to center field. The next batter, Lew Ford, added an RBI single before Joash Brodin hit a three-run home run to extend the Ducks lead to 6-0.
The Blue Crabs responded with a run in the bottom of the third on a wild pitch off Ducks starter Jared Lansford. Long Island answered with two more runs in the fourth, including a solo home run from Fehlandt Lentini – his first of the year. After another wild pitch allowed a second run to score for Southern Maryland in the bottom of the fourth, the Flock once again responded with two runs in the fifth. Lentini provided the damage in the fifth with a two-out, two-run single.
Southern Maryland added a run in the bottom of the fifth and three more in the bottom of the seventh to trim the Ducks lead to 10-6. That was as close as the Blue Crabs would get, as a sacrifice fly from Ford in the eighth extended the Ducks lead back to five.
Lansford (2-1) earned the win for Long Island, allowing three runs (two earned) on six hits, one walk and five strikeouts over six innings. Hernandez (0-3) received the loss after allowing eight runs on ten hits, two walks and five strikeouts in four innings.
Five different Ducks had two hits in the ballgame, including four RBI for Brodin and three RBI for Lentini. Ford and Puckett each added a pair of RBI as well.
