(Deer Park, N.Y., Jan. 13, 2015) – On Tuesday morning, the Long Island Ducks began their annual TD Bank “Take a Duck to Class” essay contest visits at John Quincy Adams Primary School. Second grader Joseph Esposito was honored as the first contest winner this year for writing a wonderful essay about “Who is a hero in your community and why?”

The day began with an assembly in the auditorium for the entire second grade class. Members of the Ducks congratulated Joseph for a job well done, and he was presented with a $50 Visa gift card by TD Bank Vice President of U.S. Field Marketing Eric Fishon and TD Bank Deer Park store manager Mary Warren-Mancini. Joseph went on to read his essay aloud to everyone in attendance, including his family and the hero he wrote about, North Babylon firefighter Dave Flammio.

After a long ovation, Long Island’s favorite mascot, QuackerJack, was welcomed by the students and even showed off some of his favorite dance moves. Dave then spoke with the students about fire safety and was interviewed, along with Joseph, by several members of the media who covered the event.

Following the assembly, Joesph and his classmates received a special visit to their classroom from QJ and TD Bank. The entire class was prepared with popcorn bags featuring QuackerJack on the front and cupcakes to celebrate. Finally, everyone posed for pictures, got autographs and received a gift bag full of goodies, courtesy of TD Bank and the Ducks.

Contestants were able fill out applications available at LIDucks.com this fall and submit an essay of 250 words or less on “Who is a hero in your community and why?” Out of a record number of essays received from all over Long Island, four lucky winners were selected. Each one will receive an hour-long visit to their school from Long Island’s most popular mascot, QuackerJack, along with a Visa gift card from TD Bank.
