Ducks squander lead in game one, storm back in game two

(Lancaster, Pa., July 5, 2016) – The Long Island Ducks split a single admission doubleheader with the Lancaster Barnstormers on Tuesday, falling 3-2 in game one and winning game two 7-2.

Long Island opened the scoring in the third inning on Anthony Vega’s sacrifice fly. Lancaster took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the inning on an RBI double by Kevin Ahrens and a sacrifice fly from Caleb Gindl.

In the fourth, Dan Lyons’ RBI single and Mike Dowd’s RBI fielder’s choice put the Ducks in front 3-2. Lancaster rallied in the seventh against Ducks closer Todd Coffey. The Barnstormers tied the game on Mike McDade’s sacrifice fly and won on Kevin Ahrens’ walk-off RBI single.

Neither starter factored in the decision. Bobby Blevins allowed two runs on four hits and a walk, adding one strikeout in five innings. Lancaster starter Kelvin De La Cruz tossed six innings of seven-hit ball allowing three runs (two earned) with two strikeouts and a walk. Pete Andrelczyk (4-0) collected the win, pitching a scoreless inning with two strikeouts. Coffey (1-3) took the loss, allowing two runs on two hits and a walk in two-thirds of an inning.

Lyons and Cody Puckett led the Ducks with two hits apiece.

In the second game, the Ducks scored four runs in the opening inning. Fehlandt Lentini’s RBI double, Delta Cleary Jr.’s sacrifice fly, and Mark Minicozzi’s two-run home run did the damage. Lancaster scored a run in the bottom of the inning on Josh Bell’s RBI single, and then cut the deficit to 4-2 in the second on Jeff Kobernus’ run-scoring single.

Long Island added two more runs in the third inning on Lyons’ RBI double and Dowd’s RBI single. Mike Blanke’s sacrifice fly in the fifth extended the Ducks lead to 7-2.

Jack Snodgrass (6-6) struck out five over six innings, yielding two runs (one earned) on eight hits en route to the victory. Ryan Dennick (3-3) took the loss, giving up six runs (three earned) on five hits in two and one-third innings. He struck out one and walked one.

Minicozzi, Lentini, and Dowd each collected two hits, while Lyons scored two runs.

The Ducks continue their road trip with a four-game series against the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs starting on Thursday. Long Island returns home on Friday, July 15 to start a three-game series with the Somerset Patriots.
