Five-run first keys Long Island
(Bridgewater, N.J., Sept. 15, 2013) – The Long Island Ducks defeated the Somerset Patriots 7-5 on Sunday afternoon at TD Bank Ballpark in the final game of the 2013 regular season.

Long Island sent 10 batters to the plate and exploded for five runs in the first inning off Patriots starter Paul Phillips. Ray Navarrete’s two-run homer, a bases loaded walk to Ryan Strieby and a two-run single by Dan Lyons did the damage. Bryant Nelson’s RBI double in the second extended the lead to six.
The Patriots answered twice in the second on a bases loaded walk to Joe Holden and a RBI infield single by Jonny Tucker off Ducks starter Pete Budkevics. It stayed that way until the seventh when both teams traded a run. Strieby had a RBI single for Long Island while Yunesky Sanchez had a run-scoring single for Somerset. Two more runs in the eighth for the Patriots trimmed the lead to 7-5, but the hosts would get no closer.
Budkevics did not factor into the decision, tossing three innings, allowing two runs on three hits and three walks while striking out two. Nick DeBarr (5-10) got the win after tossing two scoreless innings of relief, and Phillips (4-5) took the loss, yielding six runs on six hits and three walks in four innings.
Nelson and Lyons led the Flock with three hits apiece.
Long Island will begin the 2013 Atlantic League playoffs on Wednesday night when they face the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs in Game One of the Liberty Division Championship Series. First pitch is slated for 6:35 pm., with the Bethpage Ballpark gates opening at 5:35. The first 1,000 fans in attendance will receive Title Towels, courtesy of News 12 Long Island and News 12 Traffic and Weather.
