GAME AUDIO: Jon Meloan strikes out Jake Eigsti to win the game
Long Island got to work quickly with three runs in the opening inning against Camden starter Sean Jarrett. Brandon Sing’s two-run double to left and Ray Navarrete’s RBI single to left highlighted the inning. It stayed that way until the fourth when Camden responded with five runs off Ducks starter Joe Esposito to take a 5-3 lead. A three-run homer by Eduardo Perez, a run-scoring single by Lloyd Turner and a bases loaded walk to Brian Burgamy did the damage.
After a 61 minute rain delay, the Ducks closed to within one on a RBI sacrifice fly off the bat of Navarrete. Both teams would trade zeroes until the top of the ninth, when the Ducks rallied with two outs to jump in front 6-5. Josh Johnson and Wilberto Ortiz singled, and James McOwen drove home both with a two-run triple to center.
Neither starter factored into the decision. Jarrett tossed five innings, allowing three runs on five hits with a strikeout, while Esposito surrendered five runs on four hits and six walks in four innings of work. Jon Meloan (2-0) earned the win, tossing two scoreless innings of relief with two strikeouts. John Lujan (1-3) suffered the loss, yielding two runs on three hits in one inning.
Navarrete, Ortiz and McOwen each had two hits for the Ducks to lead the way.
