Brownell earns 13th win to tie for league lead
(Sugar Land, Texas, Sept. 2, 2014) – The Long Island Ducks defeated the Sugar Land Skeeters 5-3 on Tuesday night in the opener of a seven-game series at Constellation Field.
GAME AUDIO: Highlights from the dramatic comeback victory
Long Island struck for a run in the opening inning on Bill Hall’s two-out RBI single to left off Sugar Land starter Steve Hammond. The Skeeters tied the game in the bottom of the second on a sacrifice fly to center from Michael Rockett off Ducks starter John Brownell.
Adam Godwin gave the Skeeters their first lead in the fifth with a two-run single to center. It stayed that way until the ninth when the Ducks rallied for four runs off Gary Majewski. RBI singles by Lew Ford and C.J. Retherford, along with a two-run double by Cody Puckett, did the damage.
Brownell (13-8) earned the win, yielding three runs on nine hits with two strikeouts over eight innings of work. Hammond did not factor into the decision, tossing six innings, allowing one run on five hits and three walks while striking out six. Majewski (7-3) suffered the loss, surrendering four runs on five hits in one inning. David Kopp earned his fifth save with a perfect ninth.
Five different Ducks had two hits to pace the offense. Puckett led the way with two RBI, while Brendan Harris scored twice.
The Ducks and Skeeters continue their seven-game set on Wednesday night. Game time is slated for 7:05 p.m. EDT at Constellation Field. Right-hander Bobby Blevins takes the mound for Long Island against Sugar Land righty Clint Everts.
