Comeback highlights wild afternoon affair in Lancaster

(Lancaster, Penn., May 17, 2015) – The Long Island Ducks defeated the Lancaster Barnstormers 8-6 on Sunday afternoon in the third game of a four-game series at Clipper Magazine Stadium.

GAME AUDIO: Highlights from the come-from-behind victory

Lancaster took a 1-0 lead in the first when Blake Gailen doubled with two outs, stole third and came home on a throwing error by Dillon Haupt. It stayed that way until the fifth when the Ducks pulled even on Reegie Corona’s two-out RBI single to right off of Lancaster starter Bryan Woodall. The Barnstormers took the lead back in the bottom of the frame on Kevin Rivers’ solo homer to right off of Ducks starter John Brownell.

The 2-1 advantage lasted until the top of the seventh when Long Island scored twice to take their first lead of the day. Another RBI single by Corona and a two-out RBI base hit from Lew Ford did the damage. A rally by the Barnstormers though in the bottom of seventh put them back in front again. Rivers’ RBI double and Tyler Bortnick’s run-scoring single put Lancaster ahead 4-3.

However, the Ducks rallied for five runs in the eighth inning to jump in front by four. Bases loaded walks to Dan Lyons and Corona, a run-scoring wild pitch by Cody Eppley, and a two-run single to right by Ford highlighted the scoring. The Barnstormers came back for two runs in the ninth on a RBI single by Bortnick and a bases loaded walk to Gailen, but Ryan Kussmaul induced a groundout from Brian Cavazos-Galvez to leave the bases loaded.

Neither starter factored into the decision. Brownell lasted six and two-thirds innings, allowing four runs (three earned) on five hits and three walks while striking out seven. Woodall pitched six and one-third innings, giving up three runs on six hits and four walks with four strikeouts. Bruce Kern (1-1) collected the victory after recording the final out of the seventh inning, and Pete Andrelczyk (1-1) suffered the loss, yielding four runs on three hits and two walks in two-thirds of an inning.

Corona, Ford, Jon Griffin and Blake Davis each had two hits to lead the Flock.

Corona and Ford added three RBI apiece. Long Island and Lancaster wrap up their four-game set on Monday night. Game time is slated for 7:00 p.m. from Clipper Magazine Stadium. Right-hander Ian Marshall gets the start for the Ducks against Barnstormers southpaw Matt Packer. It’s the “Ducks Game of the Week” on 103.9-FM LI News Radio.
