(Central Islip, N.Y., July 18, 2018) – The Long Island Ducks were defeated by the New Britain Bees 7-2 on Wednesday afternoon in game one of a day/night doubleheader at Bethpage Ballpark.
New Britain took a 3-0 lead in the second inning against Ducks starter Lee Sosa on a bases loaded walk to Darren Ford and a two-run single by Brock Stassi. A walk by Vicente Conde in the third brought in the Bees fourth run of the afternoon.
Long Island closed to within 4-2 in the bottom of the third via Emilio Bonifacio’s solo home run to left field and Daniel Fields’ RBI double to right off Bees starter Andy Van Hekken. However, a three-run fourth by the Bees increased their lead to five. Jamar Walton’s RBI single and bases loaded walks to Ryan Wagner and Conde did the damage.
Van Hekken (4-5) collected the win, tossing five and one-third innings, yielding two runs on 10 hits and a walk with five strikeouts. Sosa (0-3) suffered the loss, surrendering four runs (three earned) on two hits and seven walks over two and two-thirds innings while striking out five.
Bonifacio, Jordany Valdespin and Travis Snider each had two hits to pace the Flock.
The Ducks and Bees continue their twin bill on Wednesday night. Game time is slated for 6:35 p.m., with the ballpark gates opening at 5:35 (5:20 for full season ticket holders). It’s Irish Night at the ballpark, presented by Shandon Court, and the first 1,500 fans in attendance will receive Commemorative Stadium Cups. In addition to the Irish National Anthem being sung before first pitch, fans will be treated to Irish-themed music and promotions throughout the course of the game. Left-hander Jake Fisher (3-4, 4.29) takes the mound for the Ducks against Bees righty Rainy Lara (5-3, 3.51).
