Long Island holds Patriots to five hits in 3-1 win

(Central Islip, N.Y., August 21, 2014) – The Long Island Ducks defeated the Somerset Patriots 3-1 on Thursday night in the opener of a four-game series at Bethpage Ballpark.

Joash Brodin put the Ducks in front 2-0 with a two-run home run to right-center field in the second inning off of Patriots starter David Harden. A RBI single to center field by Brendan Harris in the fifth extended the lead to three.

Somerset clawed back to within a run in the eighth on Brian Barden’s RBI single to left off Ducks starter Shaun Garceau. However, Tommy Organ and David Kopp kept the Patriots off the scoreboard for the remainder of the game.

Garceau (12-3) earned the win, tossing seven and one-third innings, allowing just one run on four hits and five walks while striking out two. Harden (1-3) took the loss, yielding three runs on four hits and two walks with three strikeouts in four and two-thirds innings. Kopp earned his fourth save with a scoreless ninth inning.

Brodin led the Flock offensively with two hits, two RBI and two runs scored.

The Ducks and Patriots continue their four-game set on Friday night. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m., with the Bethpage Ballpark gates opening at 6:05. It’s “Home Run Against Hunger” night at the ballpark, and the first 1,500 fans in attendance will receive Commemorative T-Shirts, courtesy of the Janson Family ShopRite of Hauppauge and Patchogue. The Ducks will also be hosting a food drive at the game, and fans are asked to donate non-perishable food items by dropping them off at the truck located outside the ballpark. Right-hander Mitch Talbot gets the start for the Ducks against Patriots southpaw Matt Zielinski.

Duck Tales: Shaun Garceau won his fourth consecutive start and 12th overall this season with seven and one-third innings of one-run ball on Thursday night. In his last four starts, the right-hander has a 4-0 with a 2.49 ERA, allowing seven runs in 25 and one-third innings. During that span, he has given up 22 hits and nine walks while striking out 16. Garceau is now tied with teammate John Brownell for the Atlantic League lead in wins this year…Ducks starters are now 10-1 with a 2.15 ERA (26 earned runs in 109 innings) after Garceau’s outing on Thursday. In that span, they’ve allowed 94 hits and 24 walks while striking out 67. Dating back to August 2, the starters are 12-2 with a 2.13 ERA, allowing 31 earned runs in 131 innings… Joash Brodin’s two-run home run in the second inning was his seventh longball of the season. The third-year Duck has now gone deep twice in the last five games after hitting a solo homer on Sunday, August 17. The Ducks have now hit a home run in 14 of the 20 games so far during the month of August. Brodin finished with two hits and two RBI to collect his 28th multi-hit game and 14th multi-RBI contest…The Ducks bullpen tossed one and two-thirds innings of scoreless baseball on Thursday night. In the last 11 games, Ducks relievers have allowed four runs over 25 innings, good for a 1.44 ERA. In that span, they’ve yielded 18 hits and seven walks with 23 strikeouts. Tommy Organ threw a scoreless two-thirds of an inning and now has tossed six and two-thirds scoreless innings as a Duck. In his seven games, the southpaw has allowed just five hits and one walk while striking out eight.
