Offense explodes and pitching dominates in win

(Bridgewater, N.J., June 29, 2013) – The Long Island Ducks defeated the Somerset Patriots 9-0 on Saturday night in the second game of a four-game series at TD Bank Ballpark.

Long Island jumped out to a 2-0 advantage with single runs in the first and third inning off Patriots starter Graham Taylor. Josh Barfield’s RBI single to center and Bryant Nelson’s RBI infield single to third highlighted the scoring. Two more runs in the fifth inning on a RBI single to center by Bill Hall and a run-scoring error increased the lead to four.

The Ducks blew the game open with a four-run seventh inning. RBI doubles by Hall and Ramon Castro, another run-scoring error and a sac fly to center by P.J. Phillips did the damage. A RBI double by Phillips in the ninth rounded out the scoring.

John Brownell (6-5) was spectacular to earn the win, tossing six scoreless innings, allowing three hits and three walks while striking out seven. Taylor (5-4) took the loss, yielding four runs (three earned) on seven hits in five innings. The Ducks bullpen threw three scoreless innings to close out the game.

Joash Brodin led the Flock with three hits and three runs while Barfield, Hall and Castro each had two hits.

The Ducks and Patriots continue their four-game set on Sunday afternoon. First pitch is scheduled for 1:05 p.m. from TD Bank Ballpark. MLB veteran Dontrelle Willis gets the start for Long Island against Somerset right-hander Erik Arnesen. Long Island returns home on Tuesday, July 2 as they open the second half with the first game of a three-game series against the Patriots. Game time is slated for 7:05 p.m., with the Bethpage Ballpark gates opening at 6:05.
