Arguello earns first win as offense totals 13 hits

(Central Islip, N.Y., Sept. 1, 2014) – The Long Island Ducks defeated the Camden Riversharks 8-3 on Monday night in the finale of a four-game series at Bethpage Ballpark.

The Ducks took a 3-0 lead in the first inning on a solo home run by Brendan Harris, a RBI single by Adam Bailey and a sacrifice fly from Cody Puckett off Riversharks starter Wes Torrez. Camden closed to within two in the second on a run-scoring infield single from Brandon Chaves off Ducks starter Doug Arguello.

Long Island responded in the third with two more runs to take a 5-1 lead. Puckett’s RBI single and Brandon Bantz’s sac fly highlighted the inning. Three more runs in the sixth inning increased the advantage to seven. Lew Ford’s two-run double and Bill Hall’s RBI single did the damage.

The Riversharks scored twice in the eighth on a run-scoring double play ball and a RBI single by Jose Morales. However, that was as close as they would come.

Arguello (1-0) earned the win, tossing six inning of one-run ball (unearned), allowing just four hits and one walk while striking out four. Torrez (5-4) took the loss, giving up eight runs on 12 hits and three walks with one strikeout in six innings.

Ford and Bailey led the Flock with three hits apiece, while Harris and Hall each added two.

The Ducks hit the road on Tuesday to begin a seven-game series in Texas against the Sugar Land Skeeters. Game time is slated for 8:05 p.m. EDT at Constellation Field. Right-hander John Brownell gets the start for Long Island against Sugar Land southpaw Steve Hammond. Long Island returns home on Tuesday, September 9 to begin a three-game series against the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m., with the Bethpage Ballpark gates opening at 5:35. Duck Tales: All four Ducks starters earned victories in the four-game sweep of the Riversharks. Thanks to Arguello’s six innings of one-run ball, Ducks starters combined to post a 0.62 ERA in the series, yielding just two earned runs over 29 innings of work. They also combined to allow just 22 hits and 3 walks while striking out 18 batters…With two hits on Monday, Brendan Harris extended his hitting streak to 14 consecutive games. During the streak, Harris is batting .393 (24-for-61) with five doubles, two home runs, nine RBI, 13 runs and six walks. He has multiple hits in six of the 14 games. His solo homer in the first inning was his seventh longball of the season and first since August 20. Three of his seven home runs have come since the beginning of August…With three hits on Monday, Lew Ford earned his team-leading 15th three-hit and 47th multi-hit game of the year. He has now hit safely in 19 of his last 21 games and 22 of his last 25 contests. Over his last 21 games, the former big leaguer is batting .412 (35-for-85) with 12 doubles, two homers, 17 RBI, 20 runs and five walks. Nine of the 19 games in that span in which he recorded a hit were multi-hit contests. His double in the sixth inning was his league-leading 37th of the season…Adam Bailey picked up his 10th three-hit game and 38th multi-hit game on Monday. He has now hit safely in eight of his last nine games, earning multiple hits in seven of them…Cody Puckett hit a single in the third inning on Monday and has now hit safely in 16 of his last 18 games dating back to August 14. In those 18 games, he’s batting .365 (27-for-74) with four doubles, one triple, one homer, 16 RBI and six runs.
