Flock improve to seven games above .500

(Bridgewater, N.J., June 14, 2014) – The Long Island Ducks swept a day/night doubleheader over the Somerset Patriots Saturday afternoon at TD Bank Ballpark. Long Island took game one 4-1, before completing the sweep with a 5-2 victory in game two.

Long Island grabbed a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning on a two-out, RBI double from Joash Brodin off Somerset starter Matt Maloney. The Ducks added two runs in the fifth on a RBI double from Fehlandt Lentini and a sac fly from Cody Puckett to increase the lead to three.

The Flock added a fourth run in the top of the sixth inning on a RBI double from Brendan Harris. Somerset responded in the bottom of the inning with a RBI single from Eddy Martinez-Esteve for their lone run of the ballgame.

Ducks starter Rob Whitenack did not factor into the decision after tossing three scoreless innings without allowing a hit on two walks and two strikeouts. Maloney (2-2) received the loss, yielding four runs on nine hits and five strikeouts in seven innings of work. Josh Lansford (1-0) earned the win after a scoreless inning of relief. Jon Meloan earned his third save of the year with a scoreless seventh inning.

Lew Ford, Brodin, and Harris each recorded two hits in the ballgame to pace the Ducks bats.

Long Island scored first in game two on a solo home run from Ford in the top of the fourth inning off Somerset starter Erik Arnesen. A RBI infield single from Lentini, followed by a two-run single from Puckett, extended the Ducks lead to four.

A Harris RBI single in the sixth increased Long Island’s lead to 5-0. Somerset responded the next half-inning with a RBI single from Mike Wilson off Ducks starter Shaun Garceau to cut the deficit to 5-1. A RBI double in the eighth from Wilson brought the Patriots within three runs and capped the scoring for evening.

Garceau (6-1) earned the win, allowing one run on six hits and nine strikeouts in seven innings of work. Arnesen (5-3) received the loss after yielding five runs on eight hits, one walk and three strikeouts over eight innings. Jon Meloan worked a scoreless ninth inning to earn his four save of the year.

Ford led the way offensively for the Ducks in game two with two hits.

Both teams return to action Sunday in the third game of the four-game series. Casey Barnes (0-1) takes the mound for Long Island against Matt Zielinski (4-2) for Somerset. Long Island returns home on Saturday, June 21 for a day/night doubleheader with the Sugar Land Skeeters. First pitch for game one is slated for 1:05 p.m., with the Bethpage Ballpark gates opening at 12:05. It’s peanut-free day at the ballpark!
