Brownell tosses third complete game of the year

(Central Islip, N.Y., June 22, 2014) – The Long Island Ducks defeated the Sugar Land Skeeters 3-2 on Sunday afternoon at Bethpage Ballpark in the third game of a four-game series.

Sugar Land struck first with a RBI single from Travis Scott in the top of the fourth inning off Ducks starter John Brownell. The Ducks answered in the bottom of the frame with three runs off Skeeters starter Clint Everts to take a 3-1 lead. A two-run single from Keith Castillo and a RBI single from Dan Lyons highlighted the inning.

The Skeeters trimmed the Ducks lead to one in the top of the seventh on a run-scoring double play groundout, but they would get no closer.

Brownell (7-3) earned the win, tossing all nine innings, allowing two runs on six hits and two walks while striking out eight. Everts (1-6) received the loss, yielding three runs on four hits and five walks in three and one-third innings of work.

Castillo and Lyons paced the Ducks bats with two hits apiece.

The Ducks conclude their series with the Skeeters on Monday night. Game time is slated for 6:35 p.m., with the Bethpage Ballpark gates opening at 5:35. Monday is Health Night at the ballpark, with the first 1,500 fans in attendance receiving Commemorative T-Shirts, courtesy of North Shore LIJ/Southside Hospital. Right-hander Bobby Blevins gets the start for Long Island against Sugar Land righty Matt Wright.

Duck Tales: With a single in the third inning, Fehlandt Lentini extended his hitting streak to 18 consecutive games, the longest on the Ducks this year. During the streak, Lentini is batting .368 (28-for-76) with six doubles, one homer, 10 RBI and 12 runs. Lentini also stole his Atlantic League leading 24th base of the year and is now 24-for-24 in stolen base attempts. He also leads the league in doubles (18) and at-bats (237)…John Brownell’s complete game on Sunday marks his league-leading third complete game of the year. Brownell led the league in complete games with seven in 2013. In addition, Brownell finished with eight strikeouts and now leads the Atlantic League in strikeouts with 65, eight more than teammate Shaun Garceau. His eight K’s were one shy of his season-high of nine done on June 2 against Lancaster, in what was also a complete game. The Ducks now have six complete games as a staff this season…With two hits apiece, Keith Castillo and Dan Lyons recorded their eighth and sixth multi-hit games of the year, respectively. Castillo has seven two-hit games while Lyons has four.
