(Central Islip, N.Y., April 15, 2024) – The Long Island Ducks today announced the team’s plans to honor the memory of late Co-Owner and Co-Founder Bud Harrelson during the 2024 season.
Throughout the season, the team will wear a commemorative patch on all home, away and tertiary jerseys. The patch features Harrelson’s iconic number “3” in a black circle and will be located on the chest of each uniform top.
Additionally, the Harrelson family will be in attendance on Opening Night, Thursday, April 25, when the Ducks begin the 2024 season against the Lancaster Stormers. The family will throw out a ceremonial first pitch prior to the start of the game, and the team will hold a moment of silence before the singing of the National Anthem.
Bud Harrelson often said the best thing he ever did in the game of baseball was the Long Island Ducks. Which is incredible when his accomplishments are considered. To honor Bud while he was still with us and able to receive the appreciation of Ducks fans, friends, and family, the Ducks hosted “Bud Harrelson Appreciation Night” on August 3, 2018. Former teammates, elected officials, family, friends and partners all came out to pay their respects while the Ducks retired Bud’s famous #3. The beneficiary of the charity auction held that night was the Alzheimer’s Association of Long Island, and the night was capped off with an incredible fireworks extravaganza. Following Bud’s passing in January, the family held a private ceremony at Fairfield Properties Ballpark to honor the life of Bud Harrelson. Aside from the commemorative patch worn this season, each and every time the Ducks take the field, the ongoing legacy of Bud Harrelson’s achievements in the game of baseball will continue.
The Ducks are entering their 24th season of play in the Atlantic League of Professional Baseball and play their home games at Fairfield Properties Ballpark in Central Islip, N.Y. They are the all-time leader in wins and attendance in Atlantic League history, led all MLB Partner Leagues in attendance in 2023, and have sold out a record 706 games all-time.
