Southern Maryland struck first in the opening inning on a two-run home run to left by Ryan Mulhern off Ducks starter Bill Murphy. A five-spot in the second inning extended the lead to 7-0. RBI singles by Sean Smith and Mulhern along with a two-run double to left by Cyle Hankerd did the damage.

Long Island answered right back with four runs in their half of the frame on a RBI single by Dan Lyons and a three-run homer to right-center by Danny Perales off Blue Crabs starter Gabriel Hernandez. However, a four-run third by the Blue Crabs thanks to two-run homers by Wladimir Sutil and Hankerd ballooned the score to 11-4.

Hernandez (1-8) got the win, tossing five innings, allowing four runs on five hits while striking out eight. Murphy (0-6) took the loss, surrendering seven runs on five hits and four walks in one and one-third innings.

The Blue Crabs put up a two-spot in the opening inning of game two as well on a solo homer by Smith and a RBI fielder’s choice by Jose Salas off Ducks starter Nick DeBarr. Long Island answered with a run in the first and two in the second to take the lead. A RBI single by Bryant Nelson and a two-run double to left-center by Perales highlighted the scoring.

Jeremy Owens put the Blue Crabs back in front with a two-run homer to left in the fourth. Another run in the sixth pushed the lead to two, but the Ducks answered with two in their half of the frame to tie the score at five. RBI singles from Bill Hall and Ralph Henriquez pulled the Ducks even.

Joash Brodin’s two-out RBI single to left in the seventh put the Flock in front, but a two-out RBI double in the eighth by Mike Richard tied the score once again. It stayed knotted at six until the bottom of the ninth when Brodin’s two-out base hit to right scored Lyons to end the game.

Neither starter factored into the decision. DeBarr allowed four runs on six hits while striking out four in five innings, and Marshall yielded five runs on six hits with five strikeouts in five innings. Leo Rosales (1-1) earned the win after pitching a scoreless ninth inning while Eduardo Morlan (0-1) suffered the loss, surrendering a run on one hit and two walks in one and two-thirds innings.

The Ducks return to action on Tuesday when they host the cross-sound rival Bridgeport Bluefish in the 2013 Ferry Cup Series. Game time is slated for 6:35 p.m., with the Bethpage Ballpark gates opening at 5:35.
