Four-run first inning too much for Flock to overcome

Sugar Land struck first with a four-run opening inning against Ducks starter Bill Murphy. Two-run home runs by Reid Gorecki and Steve Moss did the damage. The Ducks responded in the bottom of the frame with a two-out, two-run single to center by Bryant Nelson off Skeeters starter Greg Aquino.

Both teams traded runs in the fourth. Sugar Land scored on a fielding error, and the Ducks brought home a run on a double play groundout by Ramon Castro. A solo homer to center by Ben Broussard in the fifth brought Long Island within one, but Gorecki’s second longball of the game in the seventh pushed the Skeeters lead to 6-4. Eduardo Perez’s two-run home run in the ninth put the game out of reach.

Clint Everts (2-1) got the win in relief, allowing a run on one hit in two innings of work. Aquino threw four innings, allowing three runs on five hits while striking out three. Murphy (0-8) suffered the loss, surrendering five runs (four earned) on five hits in five innings.

Broussard led the Flock with three hits while Hall added a pair of doubles.

The Ducks continue their homestand on Monday evening when they open up a five-game series with the cross-sound rival Bridgeport Bluefish. The series will begin with a single admission doubleheader featuring two seven inning games. First pitch for the opener is scheduled for 6:05 p.m., with the Bethpage Ballpark gates opening at 5:35. Game two will begin approximately 30 minutes after the completion of game one. MLB veteran Dontrelle Willis gets the start for the Ducks in game one against Bluefish southpaw Hunter Jones. Right-hander John Brownell toes the rubber for Long Island in game two against Bluefish righty and former Duck Mike Parisi.
