Ducks tie season-high with ten runs

(Central Islip, N.Y., July 17, 2013) – The Long Island Ducks defeated the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs 10-6 on Wednesday night in the finale of a three-game series at Bethpage Ballpark.

Joash Brodin opened the scoring with a leadoff solo home run to left field, and Bill Hall added a RBI groundout in the first. Alvin Colina put the Blue Crabs on the scoreboard with a RBI single in the second inning, but Long Island cracked the game open in the bottom of the second, scoring six runs off Blue Crabs starter Michael Ballard. Two-run doubles by Josh Barfield and Hall along with an Adam Bailey RBI single to right and Ray Navarrete’s sacrifice fly accounted for the scoring.

Southern Maryland scored three runs in the third inning, but Bailey answered with a two-run single in the bottom half of the frame to push the lead to 10-4. Cyle Hankerd hit a two-run homer for the Blue Crabs in the top of the fifth, but that would wrap up the scoring.

Long Island starter John Brownell (8-5) recorded the win, allowing six runs on seven hits with five strikeouts in five innings. Ballard (6-6) took the loss for Southern Maryland, letting up eight runs on seven hits in just two innings of work.

Barfield led the Ducks with four hits, while Bryant Nelson and Hall each added two. Hall and Bailey each drove in three runs, and Barfield recorded two RBI.

The Ducks continue their homestand when they open up a four-game set against the Camden Riversharks on Thursday night. Game time is slated for 7:05 p.m., with the Bethpage Ballpark gates opening at 6:05. The first 1,500 fans in attendance will receive 2012 Atlantic League Championship Logo Caps, presented by Ridgewood Savings Bank. Left-hander Bill Murphy starts for the Ducks, while righty A.J. Battisto gets the ball for the Riversharks.

Duck Tales: The ten runs the Ducks scored tied their season-high. Long Island also scored ten runs April 26 against Sugar Land and May 20 at Camden. The six runs scored by the Ducks in the second inning was their second-largest run total in a single inning this year. An eight-run third inning on April 26 was the largest of the season…Joash Brodin’s leadoff home run in the first inning was his ninth longball of the season, and the second time he’s led off the game with a home run. The Ducks have four total leadoff homers, with Danny Perales collecting the other two…Josh Barfield posted his team-high third four-hit game of the season and his 15th multi-hit game of the year overall. Barfield also recorded two RBI for the fourth time this season. He has driven in multiple runs five times. With three runs scored, Barfield tied the team high for runs in a game in 2013…With two hits, Bryant Nelson recorded his 20th two-hit game and Adam Bailey posted his 18th two-hit game. Nelson now has 23 multi-hit games on the year while Bailey has 21…Bill Hall and Bailey each posted three-RBI games. It was Hall’s second and Bailey’s first of the year. Hall now has seven multi-RBI games, and Bailey now has nine…The Ducks pitching staff tied their season high with 12 strikeouts. They also struck out 12 on May 1 against Somerset. The staff has now struck out 576 batters, the most in the Atlantic League.
